Some years ago I took on an assig in a southemty to work with people on public welfare. What Iwao do was show that everybody has the capacityto be self-suffit, and all we have to do is to activatethem. I asked the ty to pick a group of people whowere on public welfare, people from different racialgroups and different f***ly stellations. I would thehem as a group for three hours every Friday. I alsoasked for a little petty cash to work with as I .The first thing I said after I shook hands with every? body was, “ I would like to know what your dreams are.” Everyone looked at me as if I were kind of wacky.“ Dreams? We don’ t have dreams. ” I said,“ Well, when you were a kid what happened? Wasn’ tthere some thing you wao do?”One woman said to me, “ I don’ t know what you do with dreams. The rats are eating up my kids. ”“ Oh, ” I said.“ That’ s terrible. No, of course, you are verymuvolved with the rats and your kids. How thatbe helped?”“ Well, I could use a new s door becausethere are ho*** in my s door. ”I asked, “ Is there anybody around here who knowshow to fix a s door?”There w as a man in the group, and he said, “ Along time ago I used to do things like that, but now Ihave a terribly bad back, but I’ ll try. ”I told him I had some money if he would go to thestore, buy some sing, and go and fix the lady’ ss door.“ Do you think you do that?”“ Yes, I’ ll try. ”The week, when the group was seated, l saidto the woman, “ Well, is your s door fixed?”“ Oh, yes, ” she said. “ Theart drea? ming, ’ t we?” She sort of **iled at me. I said tothe man who did the work,it’ s a very funnything. I’ m beginning to feel a lot better . ” That helpedthe group to begin to dream. These seemingly **allsuccesses al lowed the group to see that dreams were notihese **all steps began to get people to see ahat something really could happen.I began to ask other people about their woman shared that she always wao be a secre? tary. I said, “ Well, what stands in your way?” ( That’s always my question. )She said, “ I have six kids, and I don’ t have an? yoo take care of them while I’ m away. ”“ Let’ s find out, ” I said.“ Is there anybody in this group who would takecare of six kids for a day or two a week while this womas some training here at the unity college?”One woman said, “ I got kids, too, but I could dothat. ”“ Let’ s do it, ” I said. A plan was created andthe womao one found something. The man who put in thes door became a handyman. The woman who tookin the children became a lised foster care person. In12 weeks I had all these people off public welfare. I’ve not only dohat once, I’ ve do many times.热词空间stellation n. 星座, 星群seemingly ad. 表面上, 看上去handyman n. 做修补等杂活的人lised adj. 有官方许可的; 有酒类专卖许可证的 (本章完)
